How to create a more sustainable energy future
By Paul Shenk and Mark L. Kamin-WrightAssociated PressAssociated PressAUSTIN — The U.S. Energy Information Administration says the number of wind turbines installed last year was at its highest level since the agency began keeping track in 1981.
The agency says the total capacity of wind power in the country, including wind turbines and other renewable sources, reached 637,921 megawatts (MW).
The number of megawatts of wind capacity increased 6.4% from the year before.
installed 2,942,917 MW of wind in 2017.
That was the highest annual increase since the record high of 672,964 MW set in 2017, according to the Energy Information Agency.
The EIA did not release a new report on the number installed last calendar year, but it did say the number is “nearly double” the 637.4 MW recorded in 2016.
The EIA reported that wind power capacity was up 2.7% from 2016, but said that the surge in installed capacity has been attributed to a surge in new projects in California, which installed nearly 9,000 MW of new wind capacity last year, nearly double the number that year.
California has added more wind power than any other state and has led the country in new wind energy projects, including a record 8,500 MW of turbines.
Texas had the most wind energy additions last year.
The states largest wind energy project, the Texas Energy Project, opened in January.
The state has been building and installing new wind projects since 2014, but there have been some setbacks.
Last year, the U.K. and Japan halted construction on a $400 million wind project in Northern Ireland and the U to wind farms.
